Iraq Veterans are more likely to seek treatment from VA than those who served in Afghanistan, according to statistics compiled by the VA last summer.
Psychological disorders, including post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), were diagnosed in 20 % of Iraq vets and 18 % of Afghanistan vets. Some 1,642 Iraq vets were diagnosed with PTSD, compared to 183 Afghanistan vets.
- Musculoskeletal diseases: Iraq 30 %. Afghanistan 30%
- Digestive system diseases: Iraq 25 % Afghanistan 22 %
- Ill-defined conditions: Iraq 21 % Afghanistan 22 %
- Nervous system diseases: Iraq 19 % Afghanistan 20 %
- Psychological disorders: Iraq 20 % Afghanistan 18 %
- Respiratory system diseases: Iraq 13 % Afghanistan 15 %
Of those eligible, 16 % of Iraq vets had received VA treatment compared to 11 % of Afghanistan vets as of July 22, 2004.

- Korean Conflict---June 27, 1950, through Jan 31, 1955
- Vietnam Era---Aug. 5, 1964 (Feb 28, 1961, for veterans who served "in country" before Aug 5, 1964), through May 7, 1975
- Gulf War Aug 2, 1990, through a date to be set by law or Presidential Proclamation.
